Chapter 17
Using his height advantage to physically intimidate the pint-sized officer standing in front of him, Ryan said, “I refuse to do any of this until I've talked with Nora. It's not enough to be told that she's ‘okay,’ and that she's being ‘well taken care of.’ I need to hear that from her directly. Once I've been able to do that, I'll work tirelessly with your crew to track down Whiting.”
“You stay put,” the officer said, letting out a heavy breath. “I'll see what I can do.”
The man left the windowless room, leaving Ryan by himself. He'd been at Ft. Hood for three days, and while he'd been forced to turn over the encryption keys to the security programs he'd designed back in the days of SysGen, little progress had been made in regards to locating Whiting's whereabouts. Keys or not, the man wasn't going to be making things easy for the regime to track him down. Whiting was a smart individual, and Ryan had little doubt that he was taking every step necessary to keep his whereabouts a secret. Unfortunately, the same couldn't be said for various elements of his rebel army, since they relied on standard radio communications to carry out operations. Thankfully, Ryan had been able to toss a few monkey wrenches into their search effort, slowing down the overall process of tracking down the rebel forces.
However, the people in charge, on up to the dictatorial President of the Republic, were getting quite impatient, and they were putting the heat on Ryan to start producing results. He decided that he would cooperate with them further only if they permitted him to talk to Nora. She was his biggest concern by far, and they'd been dragging this out long enough. A couple of hours before, he'd walked out of the control room in the command center, stating he wasn't lifting a finger until he talked to Nora.
The officer came back into the room a few minutes later, actually smiling for once. “Good news, Mr. Durant. Your girlfriend has been located and is being brought to a telephone as I speak. You will be allowed to speak with her for five minutes, and the call will be terminated at that point.”
Ryan wished it was longer. However, it would be enough time for him to know that she was alive and well. If she wasn't -- there would be hell to pay.
He still had a few tricks up his sleeve, in the form of computer viruses, ones that would create some difficult messes for the folks in the command center, should he decide to deploy them. That would come as a last resort, however, when he didn't have anything else to lose. The best thing he could do at the moment was to work as slowly as possible, feeding them 'valuable' tidbits only when it was absolutely necessary.
“When will this telephone call take place?” Ryan asked.
“I will take you to the appropriate telephone now.”
Ryan followed the man out of the room, massaging his shoulder.
